My biochem notes and I are getting ready to jet off to the Windy City for a wedding and I’m looking forward to some fall weather (for context, it’s 8:00am in Miami and already 80 degrees). But before we take to the sky, its time for Health Policy Happenings.
What I’m Doing: Anatomy, that medical student rite of passage, has now come and gone. But even while I was in the midst of hours in the lab and memorization by nutty mnemonics, I still tried to keep up with my healthy habits. This included some at-home yoga thanks to Yoga With Adriene. I’m hoping that consistent attention to healthy eating, sleeping, movement and outside passions will help stave off burnout for a long time–but if that does not work, I’ll turn to The Female Doc and her incredible work on physician burnout.

What I’m Reading: Trapped by the ‘Walmart of Heroin’ offers an in-depth look at the political, medical, and social complexities of drug abuse and the effort to help those addicted to heroin in Philadelphia.
What I’m (Not) Watching: New Amsterdam on NBC. My love affair with Grey’s Anatomy is still strong and I’m working through 14 seasons of ER on Hulu, so there’s no room for this comically idealistic show. If you actually want to know about New York City’s premier public hospital, Bellevue (on which “the ‘Dam’ is based), I HIGHLY recommend Bellevue: Three Centuries of Medicine and Mayhem at America’s Most Storied Hospital by David Oshinky. [Also mentioned in our first Your Monthly Prescription.]
What I’m Listening To: Bedside Rounds hosted by Dr. Adam Rodman. This podcast is the perfect mix of my love of history and medicine, and they’re the ideal length for my commute to school each day. As a first year medical student, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning how the physical became a “ritual of the modern doctor’s appointment” and how Laennec invented the stethoscope.
